At St John’s we regularly support both local and international charitable causes.
The North London Hospice - NLH - (http://www.northlondonhospice.org) is a registered charity and has been caring for local people since 1984. Their services are provided free of charge by specially trained multi-professional teams, which include doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, counsellors, and chaplains. The collection taken at our annual Service of Nine lessons and Carols in December is donated to the NLH.
Homeless Action in Barnet - HAB - (http://www.habcentre.org) whose vision is a society where all people are valued equally whatever their personal circumstances and have a safe place to call home. The Day Centre developed from the work of Ballards Lane Methodist Church, Finchley Reform Synagogue and the forum Barnet Action on Single Homelessness. The Day Centre Opened in 1997. The cash collections taken at our Christmas Eve Midnight Mass and Christmas Day Services are donated to HAB. Likewise the cash collection taken at our Harvest Festival Service is also donated to HAB together with Harvest gifts of food both packaged and perishable.
The Children’s Society - CS - (http://www.childrenssociety.org.uk) whose network of programmes includes drop-in services for runaways, children's centres and support for young carers. They support children who are refugees from violence, and they give those in care a voice. The cash collection taken at our Christingle Service is donated to CS. Our School also has a special collection at the same time which is also donated to CS.
Christian Aid – CA – (http://www.christianaid.org.uk) is a Christian organisation that insists the world can and must be swiftly changed to one where everyone can live a full life, free from poverty. They provide urgent, practical and effective assistance where need is great, tackling the effects of poverty as well as its root causes. Our cash collections taken at our Service during Christian Aid week in May each year is donated to CA.
Friends of Amasango – FRAMA – (http://www.amasango.org.uk) is the UK charity that supports the work of the Amasango Career School in Grahamstown, South Africa. This special needs school enables street children to obtain a primary education and build self-esteem. The principal of the school visits the UK annually and proceeds from events such as our Burn’s Night and Christmas raffle are donated to FRAMA. Some of our younger members have spent some time volunteering at the school in South Africa.
Other organisations which we support on an intermittent basis are:
Christians Against Poverty (https://capuk.org)
Send a Cow (http://www.sendacow.org.uk)
Churches Together in Friern Barnet, Whetstone and New Southgate
St John’s is an active member of the local Churches Together in Friern Barnet, Whetstone and New Southgate. Ecumenical events such as Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, World Day of Prayer, Pentecost and an Advent Service are supported by the 13 churches involved.
St. Peter’s Bourne Christian Educational & Spiritual Centre (SPB) (http://www.stpetersbourne.com)
St. Peter's Bourne Management Company manages this valuable asset. Many people comment on the sense of peace they feel at St. Peter's Bourne. The house inherits this spiritual tranquility from the Community of the Resurrection of Our Lord, Grahamstown Sisters whose home it once was. It is something we value and share with all who come. Whether our visitors are looking for space and time alone, or participating in a study group, meeting or attending a small conference.
